Suspect charged with armed robbery, kidnapping following Princess Street investigation

WILMINGTON —  A weeklong Wilmington Police Department investigation into a downtown-area robbery has culminated in the arrest of a 36-year-old man, who now faces a litany of felony charges including kidnapping and armed robbery.

Joseph Wilson was taken into custody Sunday, Jan. 11, following a targeted traffic stop in the 2100 block of West Lake Shore Drive. Wilmington Police Department officers, working alongside partner agencies, tracked Wilson throughout the week after a business in the 1000 block of Princess Street was held up on Jan. 6.

According to a WPD news release, Wilson was apprehended without incident. During the arrest, officers reportedly discovered narcotics on his person, adding drug possession to the list of charges.

Wilson is currently facing:

  • Robbery with a dangerous weapon
  • 2nd degree kidnapping
  • Interfere with emergency communication
  • Felony possession of cocaine
  • Possession of schedule IV controlled substance
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Driving while license revoked

Wilson is being held without bond at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. He will have his first appearance in court on Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the New Hanover County Courthouse in Courtroom 100.
