Man arrested in Virginia for Wilmington shooting

WILMINGTON — A suspect has been arrested in the first shooting of the New Year in Wilmington.

Police took into custody Earl Hardy Jr., 55 of Wilmington, at a Virginia rest stop on New Year’s Day. Detectives were able to obtain a warrant for probably cause in a first-degree murder that took place on Constitution Boulevard Thursday morning.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Virginia State Police stepped in to apprehend Hardy, who will be extradited to New Hanover County.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of Constitution Boulevard in Wilmington around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, to find 55-year-old James Bunting with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Novant NHRMC but died from his injuries.

Investigators said Bunting and Hardy knew one another; however no further details are being release as the investigation is ongoing.
