WPD investigating explosive located in midtown

WILMINGTON — Members of the Wilmington Police Bomb Squad and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are investigating a potential explosive device located off Independence Boulevard today.

Shortly after 9:15 a.m., the Wilmington Police Department was called to the 2900 block of Midtown Way regarding a suspicious package. Members of the WPD Bomb Squad, which is made up of WPD officers and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, investigated the device and were able to determine that it was, in fact, a potential explosive, according to the WPD.

The decision was made to utilize techniques on scene to render the explosive device safe so it could be removed and investigated further. The area where the device was located is secure, the device is going to be examined in detail, and the investigation is ongoing. Unfortunately, no more details are available at this time.
