We start this week with the type of story we don’t usually cover — a DWI.
Wilmington, unfortunately, has no shortage of intoxicated driving incidents. However, what makes this one different is that — after months of delays — this case was thrown out for lack of probable cause, despite the driver being caught speeding on a downtown street with a blood-alcohol level near twice the legal limit and illegal prescription painkillers in the car.
What makes the case more interesting is that the judge who threw out the case has a long and contentious history of handling — and mishandling — DWI cases, as well as her own history with driving intoxicated.
After that, it’s a look at the ‘end’ of the war of H2GO’s $60 million in assets. While the withdrawal of an appeal in Superior Court effectively ends the legal case, the looming issue of legal fees remains — and the ongoing grudge between Leland and its neighbors appears far from resolved.
Lastly, a look at a proposed rate hike for parking in Carolina Beach. The idea sparked strong and largely negative feedback from residents and visitors alike on social media — it also provoked one appointed town official to take to Facebook to call the story inaccurate (it isn’t, we double-checked).
