WILMINGTON — As temperatures drop below freezing and a wintry mix of precipitation approaches the southeastern North Carolina region this week, area shelters are preparing to take in those seeking warmth.

The Healing Place of New Hanover County added an extra 18 beds to its facility — nine for women and nine for men. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out begins at 7 a.m. daily. People who check in will receive a towel, washcloth, two blankets and a pillow.

The Warming Shelter ILM is open nightly through Saturday, Jan. 25, with guest check-in at 5 p.m. The shelter is located at Grace United Methodist at 401 Grace St. and provides dinner and breakfast, as well as snacks and beverages to its attendees. On Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., it will have a mobile shower trailer open as well.

Volunteers are needed and can sign up for the Warming Shelter here and email the Healing Place at info@thpnc.org.
