WILMINGTON — A $15-million project, to be located on the Northisde of downtown Wilmington, welcomes the community to a meeting Monday evening to garner feedback on what it wants to see of the multi-cultural athletic complex.
Optimism Oasis is slated to be built on 20 acres, featuring world-class sports and wellness facilities; it’s slated to be located The public is invited to a meeting Dec. 2, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at The Sportsmen’s Club, 1111 Castle St.
Plans include:
- Track and field complex with a 400-meter, 8-lane track
- Gym and swim complex suitable for hosting regional tournaments in four sports, including six indoor basketball and 12 indoor volleyball courts, an Olympic-sized and 25-meter pools, and a 200 meter indoor running track
- Amphitheater
- Water park and splash pad
- Playground
- Skateboard park and bowl
- Maker space
- 100-meter obstacle course
- Two day care centers
- Health and wellness hotel for visiting teams and athletes
“The success of Optimism Oasis depends on the active participation and collaboration of all stakeholders — from civic leaders and educators to parents and youth,” Optimism Oasis Board Chair Dr. Philip Brown said in a release. “Optimism Oasis will be designed to create opportunities, nurture personal growth, and support mental and physical health equity for all members of our community.”
Brown will talk about the park’s vision and guiding principles on Monday evening, including its focus on Opportunity, Nurturing and Equity (ONE). As well, architect Zena Howard of Perkins & Will will present the facility’s features and benefits to the community.
There also will be opportunities for the public to share ideas, concerns, and priorities with board members and project leaders.
