Oak Island’s Honor Flag deadline approaching

OAK ISLAND — Anyone who wants to memorialize active or fallen veterans can do so in Oak Island as part of its Honor Flag initiative.

The  application to purchase a flag to go in Middleton Park Complex and the Veterans Memorial Park is open, with a deadline of Wednesday, Jan. 31. Up to 48 personalized flags will be displayed on posts in both parks, displaying the name and photo of the military personnel and their dates of service. Flags will be displayed in Middleton Park Complex on the weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Flags in Veterans Memorial Park will be displayed on 9/11 and Veterans Day. 

 The cost of the flag is $70, although payment is not processed unless the applicant is selected. 

Applicants must provide military ID, honorable discharge documents, and a photo in uniform. A background check, funded by the town of Oak Island, is also required. Applications can be found here.

The program welcomes families of the honoree’s to help setup and remove the flags. Families will receive the flag they purchased after the display period has ended.
