Kadeem Allen opened the season in Hawaii with heroics, hitting a last second, game-winning layup to lift No. 12 Arizona; the Wilmington native missed Tuesday’s game with a lingering knee injury.
After the Wildcats 78-66 victory over CSU-Bakersfield, Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller addressed Allen’s status moving forward.
“Hopefully, we’re going to get Kadeem back here and with that it will be a much needed boost,” said Miller. “I don’t really know a timeline or prognosis. We’re taking it at two to three-day increments, hoping that the swelling is okay. He doesn’t have any structural damage. There’s no surgery needed, but he’s unable to play at this point.”
Miller did mention that it’s not likely to be a long-term injury. The senior guard suffered the injury during Friday’s match-up against Michigan State prior to his game-winner.
“I don’t think he has an injury that’s going to take him a long time to get back but we’re certainly not going to lose sight of the big picture and rush him back,” he said. “Kadeem would like to play right now but he can’t.”
Wilson guides Coastal Carolina to first-win
The Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team has just three returners who saw significant playing time last season as veteran Coach Cliff Ellis tries to mix and match a handful of youth, experience and transfers. Following a setback to College of Charleston on Monday, the Chanticleers cruised to their first win of the season Wednesday night following an 89-59 victory over Coppin State.
Laney High School product Elijah Wilson has now posted double-digit scoring efforts in all three games this season. After being held scoreless in the opening half in the Chanticleers home-opener in a 71-64 setback against College of Charleston, the senior shooting guard came alive with 16 points after the break. Wilson knocked down four treys during the second half push and finished 6-of-15 from the field.
On Wednesday, the Wilmington native was electric right from the opening tip. Wilson sank four shots from downtown and went 6-for-7 from the free throw line to lead Coastal Carolina with a team-high 18 points.
Chicago Bears’ kicker Connor Barth connects on longest field goal since 2012
Connor Barth made his only field-goal attempt of the game this past Sunday in the Chicago Bears 36-10 setback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Wilmington native’s 54-yarder was his longest since 2012, when he played for the Bucs. Barth has now hit eight straight field goal attempts since opening the season 4-of-7. On the year, the veteran place kicker has connected on 12-of-15 tries. He’s 4-for-4 on distances between 20-29 yards, 6-for-7 on 30-39 yard attempts, 1-for-2 on 40-49 yard tries and 1-of-2 on 50-plus yard attempts.
Chicago has a 2-7 record heading into a 1 p.m. kick off at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, against the New York Giants on Sunday, Nov. 20.
