New Hanover 59 Laney 45
The New Hanover girls basketball team had three players in double figures as the Wildcats ran away from Laney 59-45 at Brogden Hall on Friday.
Amani Muhammad had a team-high 18 points. New Hanover went 9 of 15 from beyond the arc, including three treys each from Muhammad, Azariah Fields and Ayonna Cotten.
Fields and Cotten helped the Wildcats get off to a strong start with five points apiece during the opening eight minutes to grab a 17-6 advantage. Muhammad scored 10 of 18 points during the second quarter for the commanding 39-20 cushion at the break.
Fields added 15 points and Cotton finished with 14 for New Hanover, who improved to 8-1 in conference and 15-5 overall.
Baley Edwards led all scorers with 24 points for Laney. She hit four long range shots and went 3-for-3 from the foul line. The Bucs dropped to 5-3 in league play and 11-9 on the year.
Hoggard 50 West Brunswick 17
Emma Haywood had a game-high 15 points as Hoggard kept pace in the division following a 50-17 rout against West Brunsiwck.
The senior captain was 4 of 5 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Aleah Thompson chipped in with nine points and six rebounds, while Blair Barefoot added eight. Seven different players found the scoring column for the Vikings, who jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
Hoggard extended its cushion to 14 at the break and went up 43-12 headed into the fourth quarter. Tara Poteat dished five assists. Haywood and Olivia Hawkins grabbed five steals each.
The Vikings remain tied for first-place in conference with an 8-1 mark. Hoggard also improved to 17-4 overall.
Dominique Bryant scored a game-high 19 points to lead Topsail to its first win over a 4A opponent following a 56-50 overtime victory at Ashley on Friday.
Keri White hit 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the extra frame as the Pirates outscored Ashley 12-6 during the overtime period. White and Brandy Williams had 13 points apiece.
Topsail led by one headed into the second quarter and maintained a one-possession advantage at the break. Ashley battled back with a strong eight-minute push and kept pace in the fourth period to force the extra session.
Carly Baron had 13 points for the Screaming Eagles, while Dana Craig chipped in with 10. Ashley is now two games back from top spot in the division at 5-3 in conference and 8-9 overall.
Croatan 52 North Brunswick 46
Croatan grabbed a 52-46 win over North Brunswick on Friday. Unique Hines led the Scorpions with 14 points.
Croatan grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and went 16-for-20 from the foul line. North Brunswick sank just 8 of 15 from the charity stripe.
Coastal Christian 45 Parrott Academy 33
Coastal Christian grabbed another conference win on Friday night as the Centurions outlasted Parrott Academy 45-33 to improve to 6-2 in league play.
Sabrina Sims had a game-high 19 points. The Centurions remain in second place in the Coastal Rivers Conference standings.
