A local theater is once again offering a series of special screenings to allow people with autism a chance to enjoy a day at the movies.
As part of Regal Entertainment Group’s national initiative, Mayfaire Stadium 16, 900 Town Center Drive, recently announced a new wave of films for My Way Matinee, which features sensory-friendly screenings. Wilmington is the only North Carolina city other than Cary to offer the program.
Beginning this Saturday and continuing on the first Saturdays in February and March, the Mayfaire movie house will show a popular family film with the lights on and volume lowered. According to the Autism Research Institute, children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities can have a dysfunctional sensory system in which senses are either over- or under-reactive.
The company launched the program in September as a way to include more families in the theater experience.
“We heard the overwhelmingly positive response from the community with the first four movies in the My Way Matinee program,” said Rachel Lueras, marketing manager at Regal Entertainment Group. “We are excited to offer up another slate of exciting films for all families to enjoy.”
During My Way Matinee screenings, audience members don’t have to sit still–singing, dancing and even shouting are embraced and encouraged.
The second season kicks off with “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” this Saturday, Jan. 9, and continues with “Norm of the North” on Saturday, Feb. 6 and “Kung Fu Panda 3” on Saturday, March 5. All movies begin at 10:30 a.m. and Mayfaire will offer a special discount price of $6.50 plus tax.
