Ten local high school football programs competed in the 29th Annual BB&T Football Jamboree Friday, August 14 at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, raising money for student scholarships while preparing for the beginning of the prep football season.
Local programs competing at the event included: Laney vs. South Columbus; Wallace-Rose Hill vs. Hoggard; Ashley vs. West Brunswick; New Hanover vs. Whiteville; North Brunswick vs. South Brunswick. Each game consisted of two 12-minute periods.
“This annual event highlights the excitement and anticipation for a run at conference titles and state playoffs for the 10 area high schools,” said BB&T’s Andrew Cooke, Jamboree Co-Chairman. “It is one of the most exciting high school events in southeastern North Carolina with a playoff atmosphere to kick off the season.”
This was be the first time North Brunswick competed under the lights at Legion Stadium as part of the event. First-year coach Larry Brock played in the scrimmage during his playing days at South Brunswick and hoped to get a good look at his new team leading up to week one.
“I remember those times getting a chance to play at Legion Stadium and it was a memorable time for me,” Brock said. “It’ll be a good experience for the team to see how they react in the spotlight.”
“This is just a really great opportunity for our guys to get out here under the lights and play,” said Craig Underwood, head coach for Hoggard High School, before the game. “Plus, BB&T has set up this scrimmage so well for both the students and players and we’re really excited to be a part of it.”

Proceeds from last year’s event totaled $51,765, enough to fund 20 $1,000 scholarships (two per school), while participating schools also received an additional $2,000 each for their general operating budgets.
Since its inception in 1989, approximately $1,156,841 has been raised for Southeastern North Carolina high schools, including 546 student scholarships totaling $532,000.
