While a rib injury sustained during training kept Wilmington native Derek Brunson out of the octagon for this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 69 against Krzysztof Jotko, the All-American wrestler out of UNC-Pembroke is now scheduled to fight Sam Alvey on Aug. 8.

The middleweight matchup between two of the division’s rising fighters will take place in Nashville, Tennessee, as Brunson (13-3 MMA, 4-1) faces Alvey, who stands 26-6 in MMA and 3-1 in UFC bouts.
The light heavyweight matchup between Ovince Saint Preux vs. Glover Teixeira will serve as the night’s main event during UFC Fight Night 73.
After dropping his UFC debut match in August 2014, Alvey has tallied three straight first-round knockout wins.
Brunson is 4-1 under the UFC banner, losing only to top contender Yoel Romero in January 2014. He carries two-fight winning streak into August after defeating Ed Herman and Lorenz Larkin.
