Laney inducts six new members to its sports hall of fame

The Laney High School Athletic Department inducts new members to its hall of fame every two years.

The following athletes were inducted into the 2015 Laney Hall of Fame class on Jan. 9:

Clifton Huff – football, wrestling and track

Huff lettered seven times in three sports. He was the Mideastern Conference champion in high jump and the 400 and 4×200 relay, as well as a state qualifier in the 4×200 and high jump. He received a track scholarship to Livingstone College, where he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2006. Huff was also inducted into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Shawnda Goggin – basketball and soccer

Goggin lettered seven times in two sports, was named a scholar athlete, a two-time all-conference player in basketball, an all-conference player in soccer, and two-time team MVP in soccer.

Mandi Westbury – Softball
Westbury lettered four times, was a three-time all-conference selection and a Mideastern Conference Player of the Year. She was a member of two state championship teams and the MVP of the state softball championship.

Dr. Dale Boyd – Community support

Boyd, owner of Cape Fear Sports Medicine, has served as the team physician since 1992. He was instrumental in the success of the Laney wrestling program.

Justin Poretti – Cross-country and track

Poretti lettered eight times and was named all-conference three times in track and four times in cross-country. He was named the Mideast Player of the Year in track once and twice in cross-country.

Andre Knox – football and baseball
Knox lettered six times in two sports. He was twice named all-conference in football and baseball. He was named Laney’s high school athlete of the year.
