State playoff scoreboard: Hoggard volleyball moves into second round

Trailing after the opening set No. 4 Hoggard came storming back to pick up a 3-1 win at home over No. 29 Athens Drives to advance in the 4A state playoffs.

Meagan Trotta had a career high 15 kills to lead the Lady Vikes’ attack, while senior setter Peyton Apel finished with 48 assists and 12 digs. Alyssa Zupan played a strong game at net with 20 kills and Elly Cosgrove added 12.

Hoggard extended its winning streak to five and moved to 20-2 on the season heading into a second round matchup against Harnett Central on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

 

Southeast Raleigh 3    Laney 1

(17-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-21)

After pulling out the opening game with 11 of the final 14 points, No. 14 Laney dropped three straight sets as No. 19 Southeast Raleigh eliminated the Bucs from the 4A playoffs in Wilmington on Saturday.

“It was just a tough way to end the season,” said Laney first-year coach Seneca Redwood-Sawyer. “We came apart and didn’t play like a team. Raleigh was very scrappy and blocked well at net. We were out of position all game on our coverage, but overall it was a good season, I’m proud of the girls and look forward to next season.”

With the season-ending setback. Laney fell to 11-9 overall.

Laney stats: Rosie Faddoul – two digs; 19 assists; Hannah Freas – six aces, 10 digs, seven kills; Charlene Thompson – three digs, six kills; Megan Clausen – five digs, 11 kills, three blocks; Zoe Ledford -11 digs; Haleigh Somberg – four aces, 22 digs; Meredith Pooley –four digs; Alex Erling – four digs, 14 assists; Skyler Curran – three digs, eight kills; Jessica Henry – three digs, two blocks.

3A playoffs

Triton 3    Topsail 1

(25-19, 25-10, 25-22)

No. 26 Topsail was eliminated from the 3A state tournament 3-1 at No. 7 Triton on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates fell to 12-9 for the season.

Topsail stats: Kayla Hyatt nine kills, five block; Maddie Ford four kills; Victoria Elder three blocks; Payton Schoenleber two kills, six assists.
