New Hanover girls tennis clinches conference title; Laney, Hoggard battle for second

The New Hanover girls tennis team clinched the Mideastern Conference title on Wednesday with a 6-3 decision over Hoggard in the completion of a match postponed by rain last week.

Taylor Walicki and Dawson Cooper cruised to straight-set wins before weather moved competition. The Wildcats top tandem also picked up an 8-6 victory in doubles over Melanie Post and Kara Ferner to secure the conference crown.

The Vikings (10-5, 8-2 Mideastern) got singles wins at No. 2 from Kara Ferner and No. 6 from Catie Dull, but trailed 4-2 entering doubles.

Dallas Barnhardt and Lauren Traflet made the score 4-3 with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, but New Hanover answered with an 8-4 victory from Louise Stephenson and Anna Catherine Lloyd.

New Hanover claimed sole possession of the league title with the victory and moved to 11-1 in conference. The Wildcats sit at 13-2 overall.

Hoggard is back in action Thursday at Laney. The Vikings and Bucs are tied for second place in the conference with two matches to play.
