Few teams play as severe weather puts damper on week one of football season

For the second straight year, week one of the high school football season was put on hold for the majority of teams across the tri-county area as most games will be made up over the next few days because of severe thunderstorms Friday.

Just about 10 minutes before the scheduled kickoff at Hoggard and Laney, all teams were taken off the field because of lightning-and after a 90 minute delay-the games were postponed.

Five games in the Tri-County area were postponed because of lightning and heavy rains on Friday.

The game was eventually postponed and will pick up at the start of the third quarter at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The game between North Brunswick and Whiteville was postponed with the Wolfpack leading 7-0 after the first quarter. Terrin Manning broke a 43 yard run to put Whiteville on the board before the wet weather swept through Leland.

Officials for the North Brunswick and Whiteville game will assess field conditions at 1 p.m. Saturday. If the field is good to go, play will resume Saturday. If not, the game will be moved until 7 p.m. Monday.

West Brunswick trails Socastee, South Carolina, 10-7 in a game that will resume in Shallotte at 5 p.m. Saturday. Hunter Ashburn has a 13 yard touchdown run for the Trojans.

Jhonta Wilson found the end zone for the Bulldogs of Wallace-Rose Hill less then one minute into the contest, while Johnnie Glaspie and Xaiver Smith each scored to take a three-touchdown lead at the end of the first quarter.
