Soccer

Laney 3    East Duplin 3

After Brian Pinder put Laney up 1-0 in the 15th minute off an assist by Nathaniel Lorenz, East Duplin battled back with three straight goals heading into the second half. Duplin kept its two-goal lead until Michael James notched in a goal in the 54th minute for Laney, and Carson Popper finished a corner kick from Samuel Young on a header to level the match with four minutes to go until the final whistle.

Laney (1-2-1) goes on a two-game road trip starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Dixon.

Trask 1    Lejeune 1

Ben Grossnickle put Trask up in the seventh minute on a half-volley shot from 18 yards out. The run of play went back and forth in the first half, and  midway through the second-45, Lejeune scored after a saved shot wasn’t cleared from the Titans’ goal area.

Trask (0-0-3) plays at Topsail on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Volleyball

Topsail 3                  Harrell’s Christian 1

The Lady Pirates picked up a 3-1 win on Wednesday in their final tune up before opening play in the newly realigned Mideastern Conference. Reagan Holloway and Kayla Hyatt combined for 26 kills, while Chandler Skipper put in an all-around effort with 12 points and 22 digs.

Topsail (4-0) is back in action today with a tough test at Hoggard against a Viking squad that took two-of-three matches during last weekend’s invitational in Chapel Hill.

Topsail leaders: Jenna Register 8 points, 10 assist, 2 digs; Reagan Holloway. 13 points, 9 kills 14 digs; Kayla Hyatt 13 points, 8 kills, 13 digs; Taylor Henrichs 3 points, 10 assists, 14 digs; Chandler Skipper 12 points, 22 digs.

Cape Fear Academy 5              Laney 4

Cape Fear Academy was led by Makayla Mills, who picked up a straight set win at No. 2 singles and recorded a decisive doubles match alongside Madison Graham to secure the 5-4 victory.

Louisa Cone put Laney in front 1-0 with a grueling three-set tiebreaker (6-4, 5-7 (10-7) at No. 1 against CFA’s Brooke Graham, but after the Mills’ win, Adelyn Massey, Lila Das and P.J. Middleton all won in straight sets to give the Lady Hurricanes a 4-2 cushion after singles play.

Laney opens conference play at home against West Brunswick today, while Cape Fear Academy (5-0) looks for their sixth straight win to open the season on Thursday, Sept. 5, against Village Christian.

Field Hockey

Cape Fear Academy 4      Wayne Country Day 1

Monique Olson led the CFA attack with two scores and Sarah Diab chipped in with three assists as the Lady Hurricanes won their season-opener 4-1 on the road Wednesday.

Cape Fear Academy is back in action at St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
