CAA Championships (swimming)
FAIRFAX, Va. – Carly Tanner earned her second conference title of the meet, Nick Lowe won the men’s 100 butterfly championship and the men’s 400 medley relay set a new meet record to highlight UNCW’s efforts Friday at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Swimming and Diving Championships at the McKay Natatorium.
The Seahawk men hold a 13-point lead over William & Mary for the top spot in the standings while the women are in fourth.
The championships conclude Saturday with the finals session that begins at 6 p.m.

UNCW baseball
Ryan LaGrange’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the 10th lifted UNCW to a 3-2 win over Stony Brook in game two of the Hughes Bros. Baseball Challenge on Friday at Brooks Field.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth, Hunter Ridge connected on his first round-tripper of the season to lead off the inning to tie the game and force extra innings.

The Seahawks improved to 5-4 with the win while the Seawolves dropped to 0-7 to open the season.
Kelly Secrest (1-0) earned the win for UNCW while Tyler Honanhan (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
The Seahawks host San Diego, a 5-0 winner over Gardner-Webb on Friday, at 4 p.m. Saturday. USD also played in the NCAA tournament last season. Gardner-Webb and Stony Brook play at noon.

UNCW Softball
CHARLESTON, S.C.- The UNCW softball team fell to Valparaiso 16-1 and No. 7 Tennessee 9-1 in opening day action at the CSU Buccaneer Invitational Friday at Buccaneer Field.
UNCW moved to 6-9 on the season with the pair of losses. The Seahawks close out their appearance in the CSU Buccaneer Invitational Saturday with games against No. 7 Tennessee (9 a.m.) and host Charleston Southern (1 p.m.).

Against Valparaiso, the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run from Brittany Duncan and added five runs on four hits and an error in the second to build a 7-0 cushion.
Senior Lauryn Buckworth and sophomore Jordan Critcher accounted for the Seahawks’ two hits in the contest.
Versus Tennessee, the Lady Vols took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on run-scoring hits by senior Lauren Gibson and junior Madison Shipman and added to their advantage with four runs on a RBI groundout and a three-run home run by sophomore Cheyanne Tarango in the bottom of the third to build a 6-0 advantage.
Senior Olivia Poplin got the Seahawks on the board in the top of the fourth, doubling down the left field line to bring home junior K.C. Shue and made it a 6-1 contest.
UNCW women’s tennis
No. 58 South Florida captured the doubles point and then added five singles wins to down UNCW 6-1 in non-conference women’s tennis action Friday at the UNCW courts.
The nationally ranked Bulls took the first leg of a two-match northern swing to improve to 5-3 on the season. UNCW is now 4-3 in Evan Clark’s first season with the program.
UNCW got off to a good start in doubles when the No. 3 tandem of Alyssa Ritchie and Christine Kharkevich rolled past USF’s Paula Montoya and Fanny Fracassi 8-2. But the Bulls picked up wins at the top two spots to clinch the doubles point.
The Bulls increased their lead to 2-0 in singles play as Kayla Rissolo handed Kelly Cameron her first loss of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 position. Kharkevich then narrowed the lead to 2-1 by dispatching Alessandra Bonte, 6-1, 6-3, for UNCW’s lone singles victory.
USF then closed out the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Loreto Alonso-Martinez trimmed Christina Riley, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 position and Danielle Mills recorded the clincher by breezing past Ritchie, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3.
The Seahawks embark on a two-match swing to Indiana and face IU’s Hoosiers Sunday at 5 p.m., followed by a date with Butler in Indianapolis on Wednesday, March 6.
