Lady Seahawks nearly upset Wake Forest; CFCC gets pair of wins

WINSTON-SALEM– UNCW closed the game on an 11-4 run, but Wake Forest was able to hold off the Seahawks for a 60-59 victory in collegiate women’s basketball action Wednesday at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Senior Tawanna Lee and sophomore Kelva Atkins scored 13 points apiece to lead UNCW, while senior Chelsea McGowen joined the duo in double figures with 10. McGowen added acareer-high 12 rebounds for her second career double-double as the Seahawks held a commanding 50-38 advantage on the glass. Senior Karneshia Garrett pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds and added nine points and a team-high three steals in an all-around effort.

On the final possession of the game, the Seahawks would work the ball to Lee at the right elbow in the final seconds. Lee would get off a three-point attempt just as the final buzzer sounded, but her shot hit the rim and stayed out, allowing the Demon Deacons to escape the one-point victory.

UNCW (0-2) travels to Elon for a 7 p.m. contest Sunday.

Cape Fear Community College

WILMINGTON-The Cape Fear Community College women’s basketball team won its second game in school history Wednesday 49-45 over Wake Tech. Alexis Redd had a team-high 15 points while Porsha Buchanan added 10 points, three assists and three steals.

The Lady Sea Devils are 2-0 on the season and will hit the road this weekend for the Louisburg College Holiday Classic. CFCC plays Wallace State CC on Saturday, then Maryland Rockville on Sunday.

Men’s Basketball

JAMESTOWN-Faronte Drakeford had another big night for the Cape Fear Community College men’s team in a 96-85 win over Guilford Tech. Drakeford put in 27 points and has now scored in double digits in each of the five wins this season. J.T. Murphy added 17 points.

The Sea Devils (5-0) open up their home portion of the schedule Friday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Baltimore City CC at the Schwartz Center. CFCC also plays at home Saturday at 3 p.m. against ASA College.
