“The Runarounds” is about a group of high school graduates and musicians who decide to hit the road in attempt to make their dreams come true. According to film permits from the City of Wilmington, crews will be set up at New Hanover High School this week.
First meeting from a casting call for Pate’s hit Netflix show “Outer Banks,” The Runarounds consist of William Lipton (“General Hospital”), Axel Ellis, Zendé Murdock, Jesse Golliher, and Jeremy Yun. They appeared on “Outer Banks” in Mike and Anna’s anniversary scene in season three, episode seven.
The real-life band — which has played Wilmington multiple times, including over the weekend at Palm Room — embarked on a tour in 2023 and recorded an album, “Live at USC,” produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads. This came after Pate and the group shot a pilot, known as “Untitled Band Project,” in Wilmington in fall 2022.
According to Kimmie Stewart Casting, everyone who filmed the pilot will be contacted this week for potential work. Casting calls also will be announced on its socials.
“The Runarounds” was picked up by Skydance Television for eight episodes. Season one covers the beginning stages of the band’s foundation, but Pate told Port City Daily in the winter: “We have big ambitions for where the story goes.”
“The Runarounds” also stars Pate’s daughter, Lilah, and Kelley Pereira (“The First Lady”).
One of the show’s producers is Pate’s wife, Jennifer, as well as “OBX” cowriters Shannon Burke and brother Josh Pate. David Wilcox — who wrote “The Runarounds” teleplay — Joon Yun, Lisa Mae Fincannon, Scott Lambert and Skydance TV’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell also are producers.
Matt Thunell left Netflix in 2022 to become president of Skydance Television. He said in a release:
“I am thrilled to reunite with Jonas, David, Josh and Shannon on a show that is so personal to them and so brimming with heart and soul. We are grateful to Amazon for their partnership, and we can’t wait for the world to meet ‘The Runarounds.’”
Pate told PCD a year ago the impetus to do the show came from his love for Chapel Hill band Dillon Fence. Pate would frequent their shows in the ’90s while visiting his brother, Josh, who attended UNC at the time.
