WILMINGTON — A local independent film festival has received a boost from a national arts organization.

Cucalorus Film Foundation announced Monday it will receive $30,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award. It will support the festival as it turns 30 in 2024. The event will take place at multiple venues from Nov. 20-24, in downtown Wilmington.

The NEA’s Grants for Arts Projects sent awards totaling $27.1 million to 958 organizations. A release states NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson awarded money to Cucalorus, due to its impact in strengthening the arts sector and boosting the well-being of the local community.

“We are pleased to be able to support this community and help create an environment where all people have the opportunity to live artful lives,” she said.

There are more than 70 events planned throughout Cucalorus, with 120-plus independent and international films complemented by performances, art installations, dance works and music.

“Funding from the NEA allows us to provide direct financial support to more than 100 artists each year, who come to Wilmington to share bold, brave, and creative stories,” Cucalorus director Dan Brawley added in a statement.
