WILMINGTON — Hundreds gathered on the corner of Market and Front Street Friday night for the city’s 10th annual downtown tree lighting at Riverfront Park.
Mayor Bill Saffo led the crowd in singing “Jingle Bells” and “Deck the Halls” before the countdown began. But the real excitement began when Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus were escorted through the crowd by city police officers.
“It’s very festive down here tonight – great time to be in downtown Wilmington, and just a great time of the year,” Saffo said after the countdown. “Let us not forget those folks who have lost everything, we need to continue to support those citizens who have lost so much during this hurricane.”
“This is our first time seeing the lighting after years of living down here. It’s very fun, exciting, festive,” Wilmington resident Kayce Postlewait said. “Christmas is in the air.”
