WILMINGTON—Who will be the “chompion” of downtown Wilmington? There are plenty of options – even Guy Fieri stopped by a few.

Wilmington Downtown Inc. is hosting its inaugural “Restaurant Madness” to determine who’s got the chops to serve until the buzzer.

After an initial round of over 600 nominations, WDI has narrowed it down to the sweetest 16 downtown restaurants.

Sweet 16

Like the real NCAA basketball tournament, the highest voted spots will square off with those with the least votes.

Voting to narrow down the top 16 restaurants to an “elite ate” is now open. The restaurants will continue to be narrowed down throughout the month, culminating in the championship round.

“We’ll have a trophy for the winner,” said Ed Wolverton, WDI’s president. “It’s bragging rights for the restaurant.”

Wolverton said the idea came from a similar contest running in Pueblo, Colorado.

“We thought it fit very well given the basketball culture here,” he said.

During the tournament, people can participate by voting and also by eating. WDI will be accepting customer receipts from any downtown restaurant now through April 3. WDI staff will then randomly select a winner from the receipts it receives for a “special prize” Wolverton says will be “food-related.”

Customers turning in receipts must do so online. Both the restaurant ‘chompion’ and the lucky customer will be announced April 3.

WDI is located at 221 North Front Street, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
