SOUTHEASTERN, N.C. — Florists in the region are buzzing to fill orders in time for Valentine’s Day.

You could have planned ahead, but maybe you’re a late bloomer. Either way, area florists have been preparing for their busiest time of the year all month.

Jim Thomas, owner of Creative Designs by Jim, says his operation is a “well-oiled machine.” About 80 percent of Creative Designs’ orders are received through a third-party agent.

“We are a huge wire service florist,” Thomas said. “We will have done a thousand orders between Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.”

He’ll have 16 trucks out delivering flowers to locals by zip code.

At Julia’s Florist, 450 arrangements have been ordered to be delivered, with the help of 10 trucks.

“It’s definitely our biggest day of the year,” said owner, Dana Cook. “Roses are typically the number one item ordered but people are doing a really great job of mixing things up.”

For Fiore Fine Flowers, walk-ins are expected to roll in all day. Valentine’s Day is the florist’s busiest time of year, but “Mother’s Day is up there too” according to assistant manager Claire Loeser.

“We’ve had our flower orders place probably about a month in advance,” Loeser said. “You prepare. You have to, or you’d sink.”
