Thompson appointed to N.C. Fire and Rescue Commission

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners’ Vice Chairman, Randy Thompson has been appointed to the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission.
The Fire and Rescue Commission assists and participates with state and local fire prevention and control agencies in the improvement of fire prevention and control in North Carolina.
Among other duties, the Commission works with state and local rescue agencies to improve rescue services in the state, increase the professional skills of fire protection and fire-fighting personnel and rescue personnel, provide technical assistance to state and local fire prevention and control and rescue agencies in developing programs for improvement, and establish voluntary minimum professional qualifications for all levels of fire service and rescue service personnel.
Its 16 members include representatives from 15 different organizations and individuals appointed by the Commissioner of Insurance, as well as the executive director. Thompson was appointed to represent the N.C. Association of County Commissioners.
“I’m excited about representing the Association of Counties and honored that the commissioner of insurance appointed me to this important position,” Thompson said. “With my background and experience, I think that I’ll have something to offer to not only assist our local counties, but assist the entire state as well.”
Prior to being elected to the Board of Commissioners, Thompson served for more than 30 years in local government, including as Brunswick County’s Emergency Management Director. He is a past president of the North Carolina Emergency Management Association and a past commissioner of the State of North Carolina Emergency Response Commission, and currently provides consulting services to local, state and federal agencies across the country.
New Hanover County Communications wins two national awards
New Hanover County’s Communications and Outreach Department has won two “Awards of Excellence” by the City-County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA) at its annual conference on Sept. 7.
“We are proud to be recognized on a national level for the creative and informative work we do,” said Chief Communications Officer Ruth Ravitz Smith. “We will continue to strive for excellence and develop new and effective ways to share the county’s story.”The following New Hanover County communications were awarded:
- State of the County: In Their Own Words video, won in the category of Video – One-Time Special Programming for a population over 201,000. Watch the video.

The Savvy Awards recognize local government achievements in communications, public-sector marketing and citizen-government relationships. The Savvies salute effective city, county, agency or district professionals who have creatively planned and carried out successful innovations in communications and marketing. Nearly 700 entries were received.

Brunswick County Commissioner Pat Sykes has been appointed the Homeland Security Subcommittee vice chairwoman for the National Association of Counties (NACo) Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee, and a member of the NACo Immigration Reform Task Force and Military Services Committee.
Sykes was previously named a member of the NACo Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee, the Veterans Military Services Committee and the Immigration Reform Task Force in 2016.
The National Association of Counties (NACo) Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee covers matters pertaining to criminal justice and public safety systems, including criminal justice planning, law enforcement, courts, corrections, homeland security, community crime prevention, juvenile justice and delinquency prevention, emergency management, fire prevention and control, and civil disturbances.
The NACo Immigration Reform Task Force provides a forum for county officials from across the nation to discuss immigration and its impact on local governments. The Veterans and Military Services Committee engages NACo and its members to develop and highlight county best practices and policies to promote innovative programs, services and benefits for our nation’s military, veterans and their families.
