WILMINGTON — Kick off spring in style this weekend with a ‘Pretty in Pink’ Party, hosted by Jess James + Co. on Castle Street in downtown Wilmington.

The 80s-inspired event, presented by Wilmington Oral Surgery and based on the cult classic film “Pretty in Pink,” is meant to show off the area businesses in a fun way. It will be held Saturday, April 15, from 2-7 p.m. Attendees are asked to dress as your favorite “Pretty in Pink” character, or in pink 80s-style attire.

“Castle Street is home to a variety of eclectic vintage and antique shops, along with Wilmington’s favorite indie record store,” Jess James, owner of Jess James + Co., said.  “(Jess James + Co.) intern Gracie is a dead ringer for Molly Ringwald. We thought this ‘Pretty in Pink’ Party would be a fun way to celebrate the start to the spring season on Castle Street.”

While the actual party will take place at Jess James + Co., the celebration — and deals — extend to the neighboring Castle Beach businesses.

The event starts off at 9 a.m. with a “Pretty in Pink” themed yoga class at Terra Sol Sanctuary, a portion of the proceeds from the class will go to Planned Parenthood of Wilmington.

Stores will open at 11 am, with the party starting at 2 p.m. The party is $5 at the door, and that will put you in the running to win a $100 gift card from Jess James + Co.

Throughout the day, Castle Street businesses will be offering special discounts for customers participating in the party.

A unique and eclectic vibe

According to James, Gravity Records will have a special 80s curated section of records for sale, and London DJ Hannah Margaret Stewart-O’Hanlon of the Beehive Blonds will be spinning retro 80s tunes for the party.

Stores and individuals plan to set booths in Jess James + Co.’s back yard during the party, giving party-goers a chance to view many of the unique wares sold on Castle Street.

“This is an opportunity for Castle Street vendors who don’t necessarily have a brick and mortar shop to showcase what they have to offer,” said James.

Some of the unique items being offered include: handmade art and paper from Aluna Works, pink clothing and accessories from Jess James +Co. and Vintage Vagabond, and cowboy boots and handmade jewelry from Whistlepig Workshop.

“People in Wilmington seem to stick to the routine they know; whether it’s downtown or the beach, we want to show people what Castle St. has to offer.” James said. “Even if you came here six months ago, the landscape of the (Castle) St. has totally changed.”

Models will be showcasing “custom” swimwear by Anahata Swimwear at the party.

“Anahata Swimwear just launched at Manna, and actually crafts fully unique custom swimwear based on your particular measurements, style, and material you’d like it made from,” James said.

Models will also be wearing “Flower Crowns by Kirsten,” and more.

Pink cocktails will be provided by Astral Craft Cocktails, and Pink Baking Co. will be serving pink cupcakes. Rx Restaurant and Bar will be providing biscuits, and baklava will be served by Kathy Rayle of Bakla-Vavoom.

There will be a charity raffle to benefit Planned Parenthood of Wilmington. Representatives from the organization will have a booth set up in the back yard to answer questions party-goers may have.

“Pretty in Pink embodies the unique and eclectic vibe of the street, this will be a really fun way for shoppers to get to know Castle Street better,” James said.

The “Pretty in Pink” Party will carry on after stores close, with an after-party being hosted by Wilmington Wine.
