SOUTHPORT — Michael David “Mike” Stephenson, of Southport, North Carolina, passed away on September 27, 2026.
Mike was born on January 3, 1955, at Fort Benning, Georgia, to the late Harold and Shirley Stephenson. He graduated from Selma-Smithfield High School in Selma, North Carolina, and went on to build a life filled with hard work, family, and the things he loved.
Mike was a man who enjoyed staying busy and making the most of life. He owned and operated a Peterbilt truck before beginning his career as a machinist with General Electric in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. He remained there until his early retirement.
Outside of work, Mike had a true appreciation for the open road and the water. He enjoyed boating and waterskiing, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with classic cars. One of his special treasures was “Black Beauty,” his beautiful 1935 Chevy Coupe, which reflected his love and appreciation for classic automobiles.
Above all, Mike cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra H. Stephenson, with whom he shared a life filled with love and memories. He is also survived by his children, Bryan David Stephenson and his wife, Summer Dawn, and Abby Elizabeth Long and her husband, Will; his grandchildren, Austin, Joey, Walker, Aly, Brianna, Brannick, Maryella, Zoey, and Lilly; and his great-grandchildren, Bryan, Delilah, and Scarlett, with another great-grandson eagerly anticipated. He is also survived by his brother, Jeff Stephenson and his wife, Cindy.
Mike’s greatest legacy will not be found in the things he owned or the work he accomplished, but in the love he gave to his family and the memories he created along the way. His family will hold close the moments shared together—the laughter, the adventures, the stories, and the simple everyday times that become treasured memories.
No services are planned at this time. In honor of Mike’s memory, those who wish to make a memorial contribution may consider a donation to SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue), an organization supporting animals in need.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. Though he is no longer here to share life’s journeys with them, the memories of Mike and the love he gave will remain in their hearts.
