WILMINGTON —
“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far
above rubies.” – Proverbs 31:10
On September 11, 2026, God called home our matriarch, Joann Roane Bing, who was the true epitome of this verse.
Joann Marie Roane was born to Dr. Daniel C. and Juphenia R. Roane in Kansas City, Missouri on August 2, 1936. Her family moved to Wilmington when she was six months old where she spent her life.
She graduated from Williston High School in 1953 and attended Howard University for nursing before marrying the love of her life, Eugene Bing, on September 17, 1954. Together they raised four sons-Carter (Mary), Roderick (Frances), Brian, and Joel (Megan), and enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage until Eugene’s passing in 2008.
Joann worked for Camp Lejeune until 1965, when she joined her father’s medical practice as a nurse from 1965 to 1979. She also worked briefly with Eldercare. After volunteering at Laney High School, she was hired full-time as the guidance office secretary, where she influenced generations of students and colleagues until her retirement in 2005.
An active member of Williston’s Class of 1953, Joann served in several positions within the alumni group and remained in close contact with her classmates through notes and calls over the years. She was a dedicated member of several churches, including Central Baptist Church and Mt. Holly Baptist Church, where her husband served as pastor. She faithfully supported his ministry, as well as all of her children’s
activities. In her spare time, Joann loved spending time with family and friends. As the matriarch of the family, she was constantly sought out for her love and wisdom by her friends, children and grandchildren.
Joann was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Eugene C. Bing; her parents, her sons, Brian Jerome Bing and Roderick Wayne Bing; and many close friends and classmates.
Remaining to honor her memory along with her children are her grandchildren, Brittany, Rachel, Christopher, Brian Jerome, Andrew, Chris, Ira, Brian Jerel, Joanna, Christopher and Morgan; her siblings, Dolores Roane Beamon and Glenn Dickey; her close friend Betty Parker; and a host of nieces, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends.
Joann will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing that her last breath on Earth was her first breath of eternity with Jesus and those who went before her.
