WILMINGTON — Yates Douglas “Doug” Ward, a beloved father, grandfather, companion, businessman, and friend, passed away on August 24th following a year-long illness and other health challenges. Born on July 2, 1942, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Doug lived a full and memorable life, leaving behind countless stories, friendships, and memories.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Yates Ward; his mother, Dorothy Weeks Adams; and his brothers, Gordon Ward and Robert Earl Waters.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Allison Ward Tam; his son-in-law, Jason Tam; his cherished grandson, William “Ward” Tam, who was truly the light of his life; his significant other and companion, Sarah Lynne Jernigan; and his sister-in-law Sarah Waters.
Doug was a proud graduate of New Hanover High School and later attended Wilmington College, where he played on the tennis team. His competitive spirit, outgoing personality, and natural ability to connect with people would serve him well throughout his life and career.
Doug began his professional career with J. W. Murchison Company as a sales representative in its sporting goods and hardware business. He became one of the company’s top salesmen throughout his career. Those who knew Doug often joked that he could “sell ice in Alaska”—a testament to his remarkable sales ability, charm, and gift for conversation.
Later, Doug became a successful business owner, purchasing and operating Owen Paint Center, East Coast Paint and Wallpaper, and East Coast Distributors. He subsequently served as a regional sales manager for Duron Paints. Even after semi-retirement, Doug remained active and entrepreneurial, operating his own small business, Ward’s Painting Plus.
Outside of work, Doug knew how to enjoy life. He loved traveling, especially to Key West and Las Vegas. He was an excellent card player and looked forward to his weekly card games at the Elks Club. He also enjoyed blackjack and was known for being a pretty good player. He loved sports especially Carolina basketball. An avid golfer, he enjoyed many rounds with his golfing buddies over the years.
Doug had a wonderful sense of humor and a personality that made him the life of the party. He was outgoing, funny, kind, and never met a stranger. He had a way of making people laugh and making those around him feel welcome. His generous spirit was felt as he supported numerous fundraising golf tournaments, and other charitable causes over his lifetime.
Of all the joys in Doug’s life, none was greater than his love for his grandson, Ward. Doug adored him and took tremendous pride in watching him grow up and pursue his dreams, including attending NC State University. The bond between grandfather and grandson was truly special, and Ward will forever carry the love and memories they shared.
Doug was a proud member of the Wilmington Elks Club and was also a member of the Sudan Shriners and St. John’s Lodge, where he was a Mason.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Doug’s caring physicians, Dr.Karras; Dr. Hobart; Brooke and the dedicated staff of the Pulmonary ICU at Novant for their compassionate care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held on 1:00 on September 19th at the Elks Lodge in Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice, the Wilmington Elks Club, or the Sudan Shriners Burn Fund.
