WILMINGTON — Michael John Kelleher, 83, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away on August 31, 2026.
Born August 11, 1943 in Syracuse, New York, Mike found his home in Wilmington–a place he loved and, as anyone who knew him could tell you, had no intention of ever leaving.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Mike was a true racer at heart. He had a lifelong passion for NASCAR and offshore racing, and he was a skilled speed boat engine builder. He was a longtime golfer, a beloved Poppi, known as “Grumpy Mike,” and a friend to many. He was stubborn, sarcastic, fiercely protective, hardworking, and always ready with a little advice, whether you asked for it or not.
Behind the “grump” was an incredibly big heart. Mike loved his family deeply, treasured his friendships, enjoyed a beer with the guys, and showed his love by always making sure the people around him were taken care of. He believed in working hard, figuring things out for yourself, laughing through the hard days, and taking care of the people you love.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Kelleher.
He is survived by his children, Dawn Stopanio and Michael John Kelleher Jr.; his grandchildren, Nicki Stopanio, Isabella Parker, and Logan Kelleher; his beloved great-granddaughters, Stella and Maiverie Anderson; and the many friends and loved ones fortunate enough to know him.
His family will miss his stories, his advice, his sarcasm, his laughter, his enormous heart–and yes, even the grump.
Please join the family to have a drink, share your favorite Mike story, laugh together, and celebrate a life that meant so much to so many on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 4 p.m. at Lucky Stripe at Breaktime/Ten Pin Alley, 127 S. College Road in Wilmington, North Carolina. All are welcome.
