WILMINGTON — Douglas “Doug” Allen Downey, a cherished family man and beloved friend, passed away on August 9, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 66.
Born on September 18, 1959, in Cleveland, OH, he was a 1977 graduate from Lincoln-West. He was also a proud United States Navy veteran. Doug lived a life full of love and devotion to family.
Doug was a man who truly understood the value of time spent with loved ones. His joy was infectious, as he delighted in sharing his passions—whether it was casting a line on the water, strumming melodies on his guitar, or uncovering hidden treasures through his antique collecting. Doug’s hobbies were never just for him; they were experiences he cherished sharing with those around him.
Above all, Doug was a devoted father and an extraordinary papa to his granddaughter Alexia, who was the light of his life. He had a gift for teaching, imparting wisdom and skills—from playing frisbee to navigating life’s challenges—with love.
Doug’s heart was big enough to embrace many, including his dear dogs, each of whom he cared for with compassion and tenderness throughout their lives. His love for his dogs was just another testament to his nurturing spirit.
Preceded in death by his parents, Chilton Allen and Marylyn Ruth Downey, along with his nephew Steven King, Doug leaves behind a legacy of love in his family: his devoted wife Tricia Marie Downey, his children Holly Litchfield (Brian), granddaughter Alexia, and Sueann Valek (Steven), granddaughter Madison, son Cory Downey (Elaine), sister Naomi King (Roy), niece Jessica (Terry), great-nieces Makayla and Grace, stepson Anthony (Holly) stepdaughters Amanda and Victoria (James), and his beloved bonus grandchildren Jonathan, Jayda, Aaron, Jessie, Mia Rose, Justin, and Nathan, Karlee, Haley and Jenna.
Doug’s life was a testament to the power of love, family, and friendship. His kind heart and unwavering dedication to those he held dear will forever inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
