WILMINGTON — Jerry Uldrich Wells, born on June 18, 1943, in Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in his hometown on July 18, 2026, at the age of 83. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Jerry lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his community, his church and his country.
Jerry was a graduate of New Hanover High School. He began his professional journey as a Fireman with the Wilmington Fire Department, demonstrating a commitment to public safety and service early in his career. He later joined General Electric Air Craft Manufacturing, where he faithfully served for 33 years until his retirement. During his tenure at General Electric, Jerry became a Certified EMT, further extending his ability to help those in need.
A proud veteran, Jerry served his country with honor in the United States Navy from July 12, 1961, to September 30, 1964, he was a dedicated member of Fighter Squadron Two One Four.
In his personal life, Jerry cultivated a love for nature and sports. He took great joy in caring for his yard and gardening. A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed watching all types of sports on television. In their retirement years, Jerry and his devoted wife, Maryetta, traveled extensively, sharing adventures and making lasting memories together. The couple were active members of the Senior Group that gathered at Hardees on 23rd Street, cherishing the fellowship and camaraderie of their peers.
Jerry was a faithful member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church, where he served diligently on the Church Security Team for many years. His unwavering faith and commitment to his church community were evident in every aspect of his life.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Uldrich Wells and Arlene Williams Wells; his beloved daughter, Lorrie Denise Wells; and his sister, Jeannie Lakestream.
Jerry leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Maryetta Herring Wells; his son, Michael Scott Wells, and wife Melanie of Cochran, GA; his daughter, Debra Lynn Wells; and his cherished grandchildren, Zachary, Damon, Tony, Andrew, and Olivia. He is also survived by extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
A memorial service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Wrightsboro Baptist Church, led by Pastor Eddie Eaton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jerry’s memory may be directed to the Lower Caper Fear LifeCare Hospice, Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Wrightsboro Baptist Church.
Jerry Uldrich Wells will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family, his service to his community and country, and the warmth and kindness he extended to all who knew him.
