WILMINGTON — It is with unimaginable heartbreak that we announce the passing of Eric Jernigan, who left this world on July 18, 2026, far too soon at the age of 53. While his time with us was cut short, the love he gave and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of those who knew him forever.
Born on March 11, 1973, in South Bend, Indiana, Eric later moved to North Carolina and worked at Builders First Source as a puller, load builder, and laborer.
Eric was the kind of man who made people feel at home. Whether he was standing beside his smoker preparing a meal for family and friends, laughing with his grandchildren, or spending a day at the beach with the people he loved most, he found joy in life’s simple moments. He didn’t just cook food—he created memories, bringing everyone together around the table with love, laughter, and a full plate.
Family was the center of Eric’s world. He was a devoted husband, a loving son, a proud father, a caring brother, and the grandfather every child dreams of having. His grandchildren were his greatest pride and brought an unmistakable light to his life. The love he had for his children was unwavering, and he made sure they always knew they were loved beyond measure.
Anyone who knew Eric also knew there was no bigger Indianapolis Colts fan. Win or lose, he proudly cheered them on and cherished every opportunity he had to attend their games. Those moments in the stands, surrounded by fellow fans and wearing Colts blue, were some of his happiest.
Eric was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Murvine Jernigan and grandfather John Henry Jernigan his father Johnny Henry Jernigan and Jerry, and his favorite in laws Norma and Dick and Eric’s Soul dog Elizabeth also know as Liza belly who now welcome him home with open arms.
He leaves behind the love of his life, his devoted wife, Vickie Jernigan; his loving mother, JoAnn Jernigan; his sister, Tammy Wilson, and brother-in-law, Stacy Wilson; his children, Zack Jernigan, Ryan Butler, Shaianna Jernigan and Matthew Zakowski, Erika Butler- Derickson Jasmyne and Dakota Wroblewski; Harley Bellaire; Sabrina and Kyle Plattenburg; Reanna and Tristan Carden; and Jose and Shabbia Edmondson. He also leaves behind what he lovingly considered his 64 thousand grandchildren—a playful way of expressing the countless young lives he loved, spoiled, and made smile throughout his life.
Although words can never truly express the depth of this loss, those who knew Eric know that his greatest accomplishment wasn’t anything he owned or achieved—it was the love he gave so freely. He leaves behind a family forever changed by his absence but forever grateful to have been loved by him.
Though his life ended much too soon, Eric left this world knowing something many never fully realize: he was deeply, genuinely, and wholeheartedly loved. Although a private celebration of his life was previously held, his legacy will live on in every family gathering, every beach trip, every Colts game, every meal shared around a smoker, and every story told with a smile through tears.
