WILMINGTON — Enoch Richard (Dick) Hyde, 92, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, following a brief illness.
Born on December 26, 1933, in Moundsville, West Virginia, Dick was the eldest son of Enoch Wesley Hyde and Opal Christine Hyde. As the oldest of four children, he developed a strong sense of responsibility, quiet strength, and devotion to family that remained with him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Nancy Hyde, and his brother-in-law, Russell Hatcher. He is survived by his brother, John Hyde and his wife, Alyce, and his sister, Elizabeth Hatcher.
On February 5, 1956, Dick married the love of his life, Elizabeth Irene Brackin. Together they shared 68 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2024. Their life together was built on faith, love, and unwavering devotion to one another.
Dick is survived by his three children: Susan Bland of Alexandria, Virginia; Richard Hyde and his wife, Debbie, of Dunkirk, Maryland; and Melanie Sphar and her husband, Doug, of Wilmington, North Carolina. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Danielle Hicks and her husband, Chris; Amanda Hyde; and Christine Hyde.
Dick devoted nearly 41 years to Weirton Steel in Weirton, West Virginia, where he worked as a machinist and tool and die maker. He retired in December 1993 after a career marked by dedication, exceptional craftsmanship, and a strong work ethic.
Dick was a Master Mason for 64 years and a proud member of Wilmington Lodge No. 319. His lifelong commitment reflected the values by which he lived—brotherhood, integrity, service, and helping others.
Throughout their marriage, Dick and Elizabeth made several moves, and wherever they lived, they found a church home where they became active members. Their Christian faith was the foundation of their lives, providing enduring friendships, purpose, and a deep sense of community.
Retirement allowed Dick to enjoy many of his favorite pastimes. He enjoyed an occasional round of golf and traveling with Elizabeth, but he was happiest working with his hands. Whether repairing tractors, lawn mowers, or small engines, he could often be found in his workshop solving problems and bringing old equipment back to life. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors.
Those who knew Dick will remember his gentle spirit, unwavering kindness, and genuine love for others. He possessed a remarkable gift for storytelling, delighting family and friends with stories that reflected his wit, wisdom, and life experiences. His quiet humility, generous heart, and steadfast example touched countless lives. More than anything, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose love will continue to be felt by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Pine Valley Methodist Church, 3788 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, North Carolina.
