WILMINGTON — Martha O. Sullivan, born on May 28, 1947, in Orlando, Florida, passed away at home with her loved ones on June 29, 2026, in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, at the age of 79.
Martha Sullivan devoted more than twenty years of dedicated service to the North Carolina Department of Correction, where she built a career defined by integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. She began as a Probation Officer with the Division of Adult Probation and Parole, faithfully serving for eight years before being promoted to Unit Supervisor, where she guided and encouraged a team of probation officers for five years.
Her leadership abilities and commitment to excellence led to her promotion as Administrative Officer, where she managed the statewide Drug Testing Program for the Division of Community Corrections. In 2007, Martha began serving as a Quality Assurance Specialist with the Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Program, continuing to make a meaningful difference through her knowledge, dedication, and genuine concern for those she served alongside.
To her coworkers, Martha was much more than a respected professional—she was a trusted friend, a steady source of encouragement, and someone who could brighten even the busiest of days. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel valued and welcomed, and her unique personality, infectious smile, and delightfully quirky sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She led not only through her work but also through her kindness, humility, and the authentic way she cared for others.
Although her years of service came to an end, the friendships she built and the lives she touched continue to endure. Her colleagues will forever cherish the laughter they shared, the lessons they learned from her, and the countless memories that remind them of a woman whose life was marked by service, compassion, and love for others. Martha’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She lived much of her life in Raleigh, North Carolina, before moving to Wilmington to be closer to her beloved family.
Martha graduated from Fayetteville Senior High School Class of 1965 and then pursued higher education at East Carolina University graduating as the Class of 1969, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. While living and working in Raleigh, NC, Martha joined a local Lutheran church and shared her faith and fellowship with others. Her love for learning and dedication to her community were evident throughout her life.
She found great joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. An avid gardener, she lovingly tended her flowers and plants, creating spaces that reflected her appreciation for nature. She delighted in watching the birds that visited her garden, finding peace and wonder in their presence throughout the seasons. She also had a lifelong love of dance, with a special passion for Highland dancing. Whether dancing herself or supporting the Highland dancing community, she embraced its rich traditions, grace, and spirit, and the friendships it brought into her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Dorothy Olliff; her brother, David Randall Olliff; and her son, Douglas Sullivan.
Martha is survived by her loving daughter, Meredith Keifer, and her husband, David; her cherished grandchildren, Stella Keifer, Alanna Sullivan, and Douglas Sullivan; and her devoted sisters, Rita Leslie and Brigitte Stocks. She also leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her deeply, including many neighbors that she met and knew from walks with her dog, Flossie, and whose kindness, care, and watchful support over the years meant so much to her and her family.
