WILMINGTON — Edward George Hyer, affectionately known as Ed, was born on July 22, 1939 in Queens, New York, and passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026 in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 86. A devoted family man, a dedicated worker, and an active community member, Ed lived a life full of love, service, and joy.

Born and raised in Queens, NY, upon graduating from high school Ed enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country for four years, much of the time stationed on board a submarine, achieving the rank of E5 before being honorably discharged. Ed carried his sense of duty and discipline into civilian life, beginning a long and fulfilling career with Con Edison in New York City. He dedicated over 30 years to Con Edison, exemplifying hard work and commitment until his well-earned retirement at the age of 57.

Ed met the love of his life Anne, at an early age on a blind date on the 4th of July, marking the beginning of a lifetime of cherished memories. After marrying in 1960, they built a home in Queens and welcomed the arrival of their daughter Karen and son Michael. In 1973 the family moved to Long Island and enjoyed all of the benefits of raising children in an idyllic small town. In 1996, Ed and Anne having both retired, embraced a new chapter, relocating to the welcoming warmth of North Carolina, first settling in Southport before making Wilmington their final home.

Ed played competitive softball with enthusiasm well into his later years as well as becoming a passionate golfer. He also spent countless days at the beach with Anne.

Ed’s unwavering faith, instilled by his upbringing in the Catholic Church, remained a cornerstone of his life. He found solace and strength in his beliefs, which guided him through life’s joys and challenges.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife Anne, his parents Henry and Vincenza (Janette) Aiello Hyer, his sister Janet Giacoia, and his brother Dennis Hyer, Ed is survived by his loving family: his daughter Karen Summerfield and her husband David; his son Michael Hyer and his wife Chanel; and his adored grandchildren Alexander Hyer, Samantha Hyer, Spencer Summerfield, Xavier Hyer, and Bryce Hyer.
