WILMINGTON — James Sanderson, 86, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026.
Born on February 1, 1940, in Hartsville, South Carolina, James moved with his family to Wilmington during World War II. He spent most of his life in the Wilmington area, where he built a loving family and many lasting friendships. As a young man, James enjoyed playing baseball and football and was an avid boxing enthusiast throughout his life.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, as well as his brothers, R.C. “Junior” Sanderson and Philip Sanderson.
He is survived by his four sons: Dennis Sanderson and his wife, Allie; Kevin Sanderson and his wife, Crystal; Dale Sanderson and his wife, Becky; and Jay Sanderson. He is also survived by his daughter, Janet Hammonds and her husband, Harold.
James leaves behind his sisters, Janice Milligan of Jacksonville, Florida; Judy Denew of Griffin, Georgia; and Phyllis Sloan of Vero Beach, Florida.
He was a proud grandfather to Teena Nicole Cottle and her husband, Loran; Kirk Herring; Paige Still and her husband, Kristian; and Cody Hammonds and his wife, Preslie. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Kristen Warlock, Marshall Woodard, Hallie Still, and Adelyn Still.
James will be remembered for his love of family, his appreciation for sports, and the many memories he shared with those who knew and loved him. His presence, wisdom, and devotion to his family will be deeply missed.
