Peggy Fender Meeks (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Peggy Fender Meeks, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully departed this life on April 11, 2026, in Camden, South Carolina, at the age of 85. Born on May 20, 1940, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Peggy lived a life full of love, dedication, and service.

For 28 years, Peggy served as a waitress and cook at Thompson’s Restaurant in Wilmington, where her warm smile and caring nature endeared her to countless customers. Following the restaurant’s closure, she continued her work at Ruth’s Kitchen until her retirement.

An avid gardener, Peggy took immense joy in tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, finding peace and fulfillment in nurturing the earth. Above all, she treasured her time with family, taking pride in the love and unity they shared.

Peggy was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church in Camden, SC, and formerly attended Oleander United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC. Her faith was an integral part of her life and a source of strength throughout her years.

Peggy is preceded in death by her husband, Sparkman Woodrow Meeks, who passed in 2012; her parents, Linnie Fender, Sr. and Hattie Walters Fender; her daughter, Kay Helms; her son, Jim Paul Anderson, Jr.; and her siblings and many extended family members.

She leaves behind a loving family, including her children: Patricia “Trish” Helms and husband Kenny of Concord, NC, Fay Sneed and husband Mark of Camden, SC, James Anderson, and Hattie Reedy and husband Tony. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her step-children, Sandra Garrett, Eddie Meeks, Kenneth Meeks, Jimmy Meeks, Gary Meeks, and Gail Walker, also mourn her passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization close to Peggy’s heart.
