SOUTHPORT — Ed Tierney of Bolivia, North Carolina, went to be with Jesus on March 14, 2026. He has likely found the perfect golf course, the world’s straightest putt, and a place where no one is around to remind him to “keep his head down.”
Born August 27, 1965, in Quincy, Massachusetts, Ed was the son of the late Ed and Carolyn Tierney, and Colleen’s pesky younger brother.
He was a loving husband to Karen Tierney, who somehow managed to keep him mostly in line (or at least pointed in the right direction) for 27 years. He was a proud father to Kelly Anderson (and her husband Caleb) and Sophie Lara (and her husband Daniel), both of whom inherited his sense of humor, whether they liked it or not.
He was affectionately known as Pops to Phoebe, Robin, and Alexander, who will fondly remember him as the guy who made the best jokes, and handed out snacks when their parents weren’t looking.
Ed leaves behind his sister Colleen, her husband Frank, and his nephew Shane—who can all confirm that Ed’s sense of humor and undying support of the Red Sox were lifelong conditions.
Karen’s parents, Dan and Elisabet Iampaglia, spent countless afternoons watching Ed happily launch golf balls across the pond in their backyard—sometimes impressively, sometimes questionably, but always with enthusiasm. Karen’s siblings—Sam (and his wife Sara), Mariela (and her husband Brent), and Cindy (and her husband Lee)—all got to experience Ed’s joy for the game in one way or another, and their nine nieces and nephews often quote “Uncle Eddie” with a smile.
Ed was a proud veteran who carried his military service close to his heart, especially his time in Afghanistan. He also treasured the years he spent with his tight knit crew at the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point (MOTSU), where he was known for his big smile, quick wit, and his ongoing campaign to convince Karen that yes, he really did need one more perfect golf club.
Ed will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and frequently quoted (whether appropriate or not).
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Generations Church in Southport, North Carolina.
Guests are invited to come as they are. Golf attire is highly encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project.
