SOUTHPORT — Margaret Fulcher, born on October 21, 1933, in Norfolk County, VA, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026, near her home in St. James (Southport), NC, at the age of 92, after a year-long hard fought battle with cancer.
Margaret was born on the Pine Grove Dairy Farm in Portsmouth, VA. When she was a child, her parents bought property and moved the family to Chesapeake (Deep Creek) where she was raised and graduated from Deep Creek High School. It was here she formed friendships that would last a lifetime.
After high school, Margaret worked at C. E. Thurston’s and Son in Norfolk, VA, where she met her dashing and fun-loving future husband, Jerry. They were married for 61 years and made a life centered around family. Margaret was an inspiration to her children and all who knew her. She aged gracefully, kept her mind sharp, and prioritized health and fitness.
A woman of remarkable energy and independence, Margaret filled her life with rich experiences. She enjoyed her career with Crestar Bank and when she retired, she and Jerry began enjoying travel together with her siblings, and with her children and grandchildren. Her enthusiasm for life never waned and she chose every day to live her best life.
Margaret was not only physically active but also intellectually engaged. She kept abreast of the latest technologies yet loved the pleasure of reading a good book. She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, games (her favorite was canasta), and made every effort not to miss an episode of “Jeopardy.”
As the matriarch of her family, Margaret was the epitome of love and care. Her home was always open for family gatherings, which included good food, fellowship, laughter, and games (with prizes!) Her sense of style was apparent to everyone— she loved to dress beautifully and was always so fashionable.
Margaret so appreciated and enjoyed the last five years of her life in St James Plantation where she lived an active life with cherished new friends while continuing to be surrounded by her loving immediate and extended family.
Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Grace (Jones) Nettles; her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Fulcher, who passed in 2015; and her siblings, Archie, Bill, and Earl Nettles, Nancy Ault, and Mildred Nettles.
She is survived by her loving children, Jerry, Jr. (Rebecca), Terrie (Dore Rosenblum), and Edye Fulcher (Lou Nichols and his children Nicole and Justin); her cherished grandchildren, Jeri (Aaron), Alexandra (Noel), Madison (Ray), Olivia, and Staton; as well as her adored great-grandchildren. Her survivors have benefited from her example and will continue to carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.
Margaret’s life was a testament to the power of love, independence, and enduring friendships.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Homer E. Wright Event Center, 4136 Southport-Supply Road, St. James, NC 28461.
