H. Gene Hayes, 94

WILMINGTON — H. Gene Hayes, U.S. Air Force Colonel (Ret.), age 94, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Gene was born on August 3, 1931, in Beech Bottom, West Virginia, the son of the late Paul and Harriett Hall-Hayes. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Edward Homer Hayes, and his sisters, Harriett Hayes and Helen Louise Lodgen.

Gene proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he enjoyed a distinguished career as a fighter pilot. Through decades of dedicated service, he rose to the rank of full Colonel and retired with honors, exemplifying courage, discipline, and unwavering patriotism.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Nancy Thurmond Hayes; his daughter, Anita Jeanne Hayes Blye, and her husband, Benjamin Franklin Blye IV; his grandchildren, Benjamin Franklin Blye V, Erin Blye Pyrzyk, and Harriett Blye; one great-grandson; and his brother, Richard Hayes.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church, with Dan Lewis and Diane Gianella officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Gene will be remembered for his devoted service to his country, his deep love for his family, and a life lived with honor and integrity.
