John “Johnny” Robert Hawes III, 69

John “Johnny” Robert Hawes III (Quinn McGowen Funeral Home)

WILMINGTON — It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Robert Hawes III, a cherished brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and loyal friend to many.

He was born June 7, 1956 in Wilmington, the son of the late John Robert Hawes, Jr. and Margaret Annette Davis Hawes.

John Robert is survived by his siblings, Margaret Hawes Blackwell (Joe), Roger Davis Hawes, and Virginia Hawes Gallien; niece, McCotta Blackwell Wilson (Todd); nephews, Shawn David Gallien and Cody Marks; and many dear friends.

John graduated from Atkinson High School where he played baseball and basketball. As a youth he was active in FFA and Boy Scouts; later in life he became a Boy Scout master in Atkinson and assistant scout master in Long Beach (now Oak Island).

After many years of service John retired from The Town of Oak Island and was also co-owner of Hawes Brothers Farm in western Pender County. He was a faithful member of United Faith Fellowship in Atkinson.

John wore many hats throughout his life – was a member of Long Beach Fire Department and rescue squad attendant for ten years; for 40 years he was the official Santa the Oak Island Christmas parade; member of Virginia Forage and Grassland Council, serving as a past officer in the NC Chapter; and he enjoyed all aspects of farming. Most of all John loved his family and was an outstanding, caring brother, uncle, and friend.

The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2025 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel. Pastor Don Yerby will conduct the service.

Shared memories and condolences may be sent to the family here.
