ROCKY POINT — James Robert “Spike” Smith, Jr., age 71, passed peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep at home, on 12/07/2025. He was a resident of Rocky Point, NC.
James was born at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA to the late James Robert Smith, Sr of Wilmington, NC and the late Lina Schad Smith of Maubach, Deutschland. Raised in several places across the country due to his father’s service in the U.S. Army, James eventually settled in Wilmington, NC, where he attended New Hanover High School.
He spent much of his career in the automotive industry, loved cars, and was a diehard NASCAR fan. He was also a Duke Blue Devils and Miami Dolphins fan. He cherished his family, friends, and his beloved dog, Virginia.
James is survived by his wife of 47 years, Teresa Jones Smith; his only child, Patrick Smith of Wilmington, NC, and his wife Ashley Smith; and his grandchildren, Rachel and Jacob Smith.
He is also survived by his siblings: Marlene Santiago of Rocky Point, NC, and her husband Andrew Santiago; David Smith of Wilmington, NC, and his wife Sharon Smith; Dylah Madej of Wilmington, NC, and her husband Mike Madej, Sr.; Melinda Hughes of Wilmington, NC; Christopher Smith of Wilmington, NC, and his wife Trisha Smith; and Eric Smith of Knightdale, NC.
James was also blessed with close friends who were like family, including Dr. Erica Grosseibl of Wilmington, NC, who was like a sister to him.
Services will be held Friday, December 12th, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home, 315 Willow Woods Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403, officiated by his brother-in-law, the Reverend Hal W. Jones III.
