WILMINGTON — Larry James Modlin, age 79, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born to John and Magdaline Modlin, Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sheryl Nunn.
Earlier in life, Larry attended NC State University before transferring to High Point University, where he graduated first in his class. He also served his country honorably for four years in the U.S. Navy.
Professionally, Larry built a distinguished career as a Certified Public Accountant with the federal government’s General Accounting Office where he retired after 30 years of service. A highlight of his career was the eight years he and Becki spent in Saudi Arabia, where they formed lifelong friendships and created memories that enriched their lives forever. Larry often enjoyed sharing stories about their adventures with family and friends.
Larry was a lifelong learner with a passion for geography and history, particularly the Civil War era. He was deeply knowledgeable and loved engaging in thoughtful, intellectual conversations – although he also had a great sense of humor and never passed up a good joke. He was a faithful Christian and member of Faith Harbor United Methodist Church in Surf City, NC. Throughout the years Larry had a variety of hobbies he enjoyed including operating Ham radio, metal detecting, fishing and some simple pleasures like a cold Coca-Cola, eastern North Carolina BBQ, a good cigar, and tinkering on his computer. More than anything, Larry enjoyed being “Papa” and spending time with the people he loved.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rebecca Modlin; his son, JJ (Stephanie) Modlin; his “daughter-in-love,” Sara (Steve) Pierson; his grandson, Davis Modlin; and his many bonus grandkids Cache, Savannah, Case, Jackson, Aidan, Abigail, Ethan, Carter and Jersey, as well as his devoted dog, Bubba — and many other loving family members and dear friends.
The family would like to thank Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice for their kindness and support over the past month.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Larry’s memory to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice, Wilmington, NC.
No formal services are planned at this time.
