WILMINGTON — It is with a heavy heart and profound appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Harriet Emma Mara on September 26, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on October 17, 1945, in Paterson, NJ, Harriet graced this world with her vibrant spirit and remained an inspiration to all who knew her up until her peaceful departure in Wilmington, NC, where she had made her home since 2009.
Harriet served her country with pride in the Navy, laying the foundation for a life marked by dedication and resilience. Later, she channeled her energies into a career at GNC Sales, where she formed enduring relationships through her warm demeanor and commitment to helping others.
A woman of many interests, Harriet had an unwavering love for art, museums, and music, which often led her to explore the cultural corners of the world, from the romantic streets of Italy to the serene voyages of cruises. Her heart belonged to the countless moments that was also shared with her beloved sister Betty, with whom she danced through times both joyous and challenging.
An undeniable jokester, Harriet knew the art of living lightly; she infused humor and joy into everyday interactions and taught those around her not to take life too seriously. Her infectious laughter was as much a part of her legacy as her generosity, evidenced by the care she provided during her years as a devoted caregiver and her volunteer work with Meals on Wheels.
She relished simple pleasures, such as walking her cherished mini schnauzer, Jinny, along Wilmington’s picturesque pathways. Harriet’s home was a haven, shared with her devoted life partner, Sherri.
Harriet is preceded in death by her loving parents, William and Ella, and her dear son, Marc. Her legacy is carried forward by her devoted sons, Troy and Scott, her caring sister, Betty, and her loyal canine companion, Jinny.
The family will hold a private gathering to celebrate Harriet’s extraordinary life, honoring the laughter, love, and light she generously shared with those fortunate enough to know her. She has left behind a tapestry of cherished memories, woven with her love, laughter, and indomitable spirit. Her legacy will echo in the hearts of all she touched.
