WILMINGTON — Alfred Francis Spencer, age 76, passed away peacefully at Lower Cape Fear Hospice on September 10, 2025, after an extended illness.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Horace Hardison and granddaughter Elisabeth Ashley Estradas. Alfred leaves behind his mother, Margaret “Maggie” Hardison, his wife of 54 years, Joyce, stepsons Butch and Travis McKinney (Janet), grandson Ryan and several great grandsons, brother Terry Spencer (Sherry), sisters Kim Joye (Wendy) and Tammy Yarborough (Dale) and several aunts uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
After graduating from NHHS, he enlisted in the US Navy where he proudly served for 23 years, retiring with a rank of Master Chief. While in the Navy, he served on a nuclear submarine and nuclear aircraft carrier. He excelled in the nuclear power field of study. His retirement from the Navy led to another career as a licensed Nuclear Operator at the Southport nuclear power plant. He was employed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as an advisor to nuclear power plants and as a consultant for various other companies in the nuclear power industry.
Alfred was a great son, brother, husband, father and Papa! He loved children and went to great lengths to make them happy. He also loved fast cars and shooting pool. He was highly competitive and rarely walked away from a challenge. Alfred was extremely protective of his family. We will all miss his head strong ways and cherish his protective love shown to us all.
