LELAND — Matthew John Swanson, born on October 25, 1956, in Summit, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025, at the age of 68 in Leland, North Carolina.
A dedicated and accomplished Commercial Airline Pilot, Matthew lived a life defined by adventure and exploration. His love for the skies was not confined to his career; he was also an enthusiastic skydiver, motorcyclist, and traveler, constantly seeking new experiences and embracing the thrill of discovery.
Matthew served his country honorably as a Navy Air Traffic Controller aboard the USS Tripoli. His steadfast commitment and service were guided by the values instilled through his Catholic faith, which remained a cornerstone of his life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John and Florence Swanson of Summit, NJ, and later Wilmington, NC, as well as his brothers, Steve Swanson and David Swanson.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 38 years, Gina Swanson. Matthew is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Mullican and her husband Roscoe of Winnabow, NC, and Joanne Layton and her husband Bruce of Gallatin, TN. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Gail Swanson of Hillsborough, NJ, along with numerous nieces and nephews who fondly remember his warmth and adventurous spirit.
The family will announce services at a later date, providing an opportunity for friends and loved ones to gather and celebrate Matthew’s remarkable life.
In Matthew’s memory, we honor a life lived with passion, courage, and a boundless love for the world around him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
