LELAND — Stephen McKeown, 75, of Leland, NC formerly from Huntington, NY passed away on August 5th, 2025.
Stephen was born on April 25th, 1950 in Natick, Massachusetts, the son of Cornelius and Edith McKeown. He was the youngest of three boys joining his older brothers, Neil and Greg.
Stephen attended Natick High School where he graduated in 1968. He went on to attend Nichols College earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business.
Stephen married his loving wife, Elaine (Mavros) McKeown in 1975 at St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay, NY. Stephen and Elaine lived in Huntington, NY for 44 years where they raised their two daughters Lindsay and Stephanie. Stephen worked for many years as a salesman in the Garment District in Manhattan before retiring in 2019.
He was a member, and past president, of the Huntington Lions Club and joined the Wilmington Lions Club after moving to North Carolina in 2023.
Stephen was a fan of all Boston sports teams especially his beloved Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. Being a four year multi-sport letterman in both high school and college athletics, Stephen passed his love of sports to his children. He coached youth football in Huntington, NY as well as his daughter’s softball teams. Stephen was a large man in physical presence, personality, and humor. He could be counted on to keep those in his company laughing for hours. His generosity knew no end and he ]could be counted on to help friends and family.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife Elaine; daughters Lindsay and Stephanie , Son-in-law Michael ; grandchildren Logan, Colton, and Griffin and many cousins, nieces,nephews, and treasured friends who became family.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, brother Neil, Father-in-law Nicholas Mavros, and Mother-in-law Rosemary Mavros.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025 from 3 to 6 pm at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market St. Wilmington, NC 28451. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 14th at 11:30 am at Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Stephen’s memory may be directed to the Wilmington Lion’s Club.
