Virginia Harriss Holland, 91

Virginia Harriss Holland (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — Virginia Harriss Holland died peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 91.

Born May 17, 1934, Virginia was the middle child of David and Elizabeth (Hoggie) Hoggard Harriss. She was predeceased by her mother and father, her husband Raymond, and her elder sister Beth Sprunt. She is survived by her children Hardy Holland (John Moody), Virginia Brewer (Joe); her grandchildren JB (Tara) and Bill (Mary); her sister Peggy Anne Vaughan (Roland) and sister in law Carolyn Hall.

Virginia Graduated from New Hanover High school in 1952 before attending St. Mary’s College in Raleigh and UNC Chapel Hill.

Virginia was devoted to family, friends, and community. She was a member of and active in both the Ministering Circle and the NC Society of Colonial Dames. She played tennis, enjoyed sewing and needlework, and even took a shot at acting in children’s theatre. Above all she took pleasure spending time with family and friends, especially during the holidays.

Virginia was a true southern lady. Although her children would not call her the greatest of cooks, she believed her squash casserole could comfort anyone bereaved. When her niece moved back to Wilmington, she called to request a casserole for a party. Virginia’s late husband replied, “Annie Gray someone has to die first” and promptly hung up the phone.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Bradley Creek Health Care Center and Lower Cape Fear Lifecare for their care and patience during the end of her life. The last road in her life was rough, however, these wonderful caregivers made the journey as smooth as possible.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Ministering Circle, P.O. Box 3862, Wilmington, NC 28406: St. James Church, 25 S. Third Street, Wilmington, NC 28402 or the Lower Cape Fear Lifecare, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.

A private family burial will take place at a later date in the St. Francis Garden at St James Church.
