CASTLE HAYNE — Raymond “Ray” K. Patro, a devoted family man, veteran, and compassionate community servant, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, in Castle Hayne, NC, at the age of 74. Born on April 8, 1951, in Baltimore, MD, Ray lived a life full of love, service, and dedication to those around him.

Ray’s journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to helping others. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a testament to his bravery and patriotism. Following his military service, Ray pursued higher education in Georgia, attending college for two years.

For two decades, Ray was a cherished member of the Salvation Army, where he worked as a warehouse supervisor. His role often took him to locations struck by natural disasters, where he provided aid and comfort to those in need. His compassionate nature and dedication to service left an indelible mark on countless lives.

A long-time member of the Salvation Army Church in Wilmington, NC, Ray’s faith was a guiding light throughout his life. He found joy and solace in his family, particularly his beloved “collection” of grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his life. A diehard Clemson Tigers fan, Ray never missed an opportunity to cheer on his favorite team.

In his leisure time, Ray enjoyed watching retro TV shows, with “Walker, Texas Ranger” starring Chuck Norris being a particular favorite. He also embraced modern entertainment as a gamer, often found playing Lego games on his Xbox.

Ray was preceded in death by his loving mother and stepfather, Luda May and Donnie Ganoe. He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Mary D. Patro; his children, Matthew Greene, Timothy Butler, Bonnie Butler, Thomas Butler, Alton Butler, Jr. and Michael Lee Hooper; and his cherished grandchildren, Rain and River Greene, Haley Butler, and Camden Rackley. He also leaves behind his sister, Linda D. Ayers and her husband Eston, and many dear friends who will miss him dearly.

At this time, no services are planned, but Ray’s family invites those who knew and loved him to cherish the memories and celebrate his remarkable life in their own special ways.

Raymond K. Patro will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and friends. His legacy of service and devotion will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
